Gemstone Value Guide

Fine Colored Gemstones:  Fine colored gemstones like ruby, sapphire, emerald and alexandrite can achieve or possibly surpass the Cash Market Value of fine diamonds.  Most “fine” colored gemstones are natural but may have industry acceptable treatments (as long as they are disclosed) of heat or in the case of emerald, oil.  Additive treatments that add color, change color or mask color like irradiation, diffusion, coating and dyeing are considered more invasive and possibly are not permanent. These stones will have a “significantly” lower value.

gemstone value guideThe key factor in determining a fine colored stone’s cash market value is the “color”.  In the case of ruby the finest rubies are red, like a stop sign.  For example; purplish-red, or orangish-red ruby will have a lower value.  The same goes with the other fine colored gemstones.  The finest blue sapphire will have a pure blue hue, with no secondary color.  A purplish-blue or greenish-blue sapphire will have a lower value than a pure blue one.  The next factor is brilliance which is connected to both the proportions and the clarity.  A well cut ruby with very heavy inclusions will not appear brilliant because the many inclusions inside the gemstone will block the light.  A clean ruby which is not well cut will also have low brilliance but in this case because of the wrong proportions.  So ideally, gemstones will not only have pure color, will be clean and well cut.  Natural fine gemstones only rarely meet all three of these which is why they enjoy very high Cash Market Values.

Reminder: A vital point to understand about a Retail Appraisal Price is that it is used for insurance purposes, to replace the item at full retail price in a retail store in the case of a loss.  Retail Appraisal Price cannot be confused with the Cash Market Value.  The Cash Market Value takes only the precious metal value, the gemstone value plus any bonus value (for very special or signed jewelry pieces).  We already covered the precious metal Cash Values, general diamond values, below you will find a general list of Fine Colored Gemstone cash values.

Size        Gemstone         Quality              Cash Value Range
2.00ct  Ruby                  Very Good – Exc $1,200 – $9,000
2.00ct  Emerald             Very Good – Exc $   600 – $7,000
2.00ct  Blue Sapphire  Very Good – Exc $   500 – $5,000
2.00ct  Alexandrite        Very Good – Exc $1,600 – $9,500
Size        Gemstone         Quality              Cash Value Range
5.00ct  Ruby                  Very Good – Exc $10,000 – $225,000

5.00ct  Alexandrite        Very Good – Exc $  7,600 – $175,000

The above ranges represent a range of Cash Market Values for “fine” colored gemstones with very good color through excellent color, very good through excellent brilliance and excellent proportions.  There are other factors like treatments and origin which can lower or raise prices.  Higher quality fine colored gemstones will have a significantly higher Cash Market Value.  But at least you now have a cash market value range that will cover most fine gemstones that are set in jewelry.

Colored Gemstones: There are so many different gemstones that can be set into jewelry and the Cash Market Values vary considerably. The key factor in determining a colored stone’s cash market value is the color.  In the case of tourmaline the finest ones are red, like stop sign red.  A brownish-red or purplish-red tourmaline will have a lower value.  The same goes with the other fine colored gemstones.

The next factor is brilliance which is connected to both the proportions and the clarity.  A well cut amethyst with very heavy inclusions will not appear brilliant because the many inclusions inside the gemstone will block the light.  A clean amethyst which is not correctly cut will also have low brilliance but in this case because of the wrong proportions.  So ideally, gemstones will not only have pure color, will be clean and well cut.  Some of the more expensive colored stones are readily available in smaller sizes, but the when size gets over 5 carats the price per carat can jump very high.
